THE ROYAL [artillery]
“Heavy blues, dark psychedelic desert metal, rock n roll”
The Royal Artillery are a Brisbane based band fronted by Zed Charles. Previously a power trio they reconfigured as a duo with Matthew Campbell on drums.
Named after the Hotel where former North Melbourne live music venue 'The Arthouse' once hosted gigs and accomodation for travelling musicians ‘The Royal Artillery’ took the name in 2006 when frontman Zed Charles was living in Melbourne with Dallas Frasca as a 19 year old.
Moving back to Brisbane soon after, the band has maintained its Brisbane base since, while playing and releasing several EP's and an Album ‘Odds and Ends’ and recieving Triple J and 4ZZZ recognition.
The band re-invented as a duo in 2016 and has been prolific in performing and recording, culminating in 2017's October release IDNTYKN, which picked up rotation on triple J and saw the band tour the East Coast twice in the spring and summer, sharing the stage with ex QOTSA/Kyuss Nick Oliveri, appearing at sold out ‘Dead of winter’ and ‘Rise of the Riff’ festivals and touring with Elko Fields. They have appeared at near full houses at the renowned Frankies Pizza House in Sydney and Cherry Bar in Melbourne as well as alongside Grim Rhythm for their album launch.
2018/19 has seen no signs of slowing, the band supported DZ Deathrays as part of their Bloody lovely / Young Henry's release at Greaser in Brisbane, injecting money into the local music industry and bringing a host of well respected bands from around the country.
The band performed a rare Hendrix Tribute to a capacity crowd at a sold out Mojo Burning Festival featuring Wolfmother and have since supported international stoner rock giants Red Fang, John Garcia & Blue Samsara Experiment this year.
The band are currently in the process of releasing their long awaited EP 'Live Export' which was completely self-produced in the basement garage by Zed and Matt and engineered and produced by Adrian J. Hiltunen and Marcelo Milani of Toothfaeries.
The first single ‘Money Maker’ from the EP was released at the end of 2018 with a successful tour completed and a new one currently in the making.
