People throw the word “Vintage” around lightly these days. But in reality, it takes a lot of very particular, refined, attributes to qualify something as authentically vintage. Occasionally, whether through passing of time, or refinement, or both, something or someone can be attributed as “Vintage”.
In the genre of classic American, “Rhythm N Blues”, or what later became“Rock N Roll” in the 50’s, Matthew Armitage has nailed it.
If Dick Dale, Chuck Berry, and Howlin Wolf were reincarnated as a studied multi- instrumentalist Kiwi, you would get Armitage. You can find him playing up and down the Northern Rivers, sometimes solo with his own loop station getup, a sexy christmas story leg lamp, and a Moroccan fly rug. Other times, he’s rocking out his two piece duo, The Swamps, who are in a league of their own when it comes to rock n roll. Armitage also flies back to his motherland annually to tour and keep his Kiwi fans satisfied.
Currently, he is recording and working his next E.P. at No Wave Studios in Byron Bay, with engineer and owner, Julian Abbott, as well as touring the northern rivers rigorously. Keep your eyes peeled for a slick, hat wearing rocker, accompanied by a leg lamp. But even more importantly keep your ears peeled for the next Armitage E.P. It will be, “Vintage” gold.
