JODI [She’s Apples] SHARPE
Byron Bay, AU
The Great Northern Backroom in central Byron Bay, Au, has a reputation for being an ear to the underground. It boasts an intimate, yet rocking front room that hosts solo or duo acts. Or on other occasions, as many players as can fit in the corner room stage for local muso parties.
The back room is flat out legendary, holding a capacity of seven hundred or more. Teamed with a world class sound system, killer stage, and a backstage green room that has tags and love pouring out of every crevasse. In summary, The Northern in Byron Bay is the spot to hear some cool shit.
But behind all of this, there is an elusive cat floating around who is responsible for staying on the pulse and booking all of the talent. She probably wants to remain nameless but her name is Jodi. She is a dead set legend. She is solely responsible for nurturing some of Byron’s great talent and giving them a crack at a back room showcase.
But Byron’s talent is just a small part of what goes through the back room. Acts from all of the world make a point of extending their three date Australian tour, to four. The opportunity to come to the underground, international hub of Byron Bay and play to a packed house full of music lovers, is one bands can’t shy away from.
Acts including The Black Keys, The White Stripes, The Ah Lah Lahs are just a few of the bangers to come through The Northern. English, American, European, doesn’t matter. If it’s good music, Jodi has probably heard about or will be hearing about it shortly. She lurks with a grin, is an ambassador of rock n roll and believes in the underdog.
I think we need more mavens like that in the scene. It may be down under, but everything under must come up.
